string(3558) "The variety of lodging options that exist today for the modern traveler is vast. Depending on the destination, the possibilities for where to spend the night can seem nearly inexhaustible. From large, elegant hotels to the more cost-effective options, these days there is something for everyone’s taste.
Despite the variety of hotel options available today, there is one hospitality trend quickly becoming a design standard: making hotels feel more like home.
When choosing a place to stay, there is no question that guests are looking for a unique experience. Some are looking for luxurious, while others are looking to stay connected and socialize. No matter which, ultimately, comfort is one feature appreciated by all, and nothing is as comfortable as home.
Hotels redefine guest experiences to feel like home
Stemming from the extended-stay hotel market, as hotels redefine guest experiences, several hotel chains, including Marriott, Sheraton and Hilton, are all working to redesign their operations to make their guests’ stay feel more like home.
As a result, traditional lobby designs are getting reworked to develop more comfortable and appealing spaces, encouraging guests to socialize, unwind or catch up on work. Fireplaces and libraries are becoming common lobby elements, as hotels work to create more of a family room feel and increase comfort overall.
It doesn't matter how much work goes into the appearance of a facility, the real test comes from its coziness. Creating guest room experiences based on comfort, rather than opulence, is driving the shifting paradigm.
As hotels redefine guest experiences, increased attention to details such as the comfort of the beds all work towards helping the guest have an experience that feels like home. Simplified room design helps achieve the feeling of spaciousness. Rooms that feel cramped do not tend to be comfortable.
Along the same lines, furniture designed for comfort and function is finding favor in efforts to recreate the home feel. Most guests prefer a cozy couch to hard, uncomfortable chairs, for example, and hotels are taking notice and adapting rooms accordingly.
It used to be that when traveling, many people wanted to “get away from it all.” However, in our uncertain and ever-changing world, it’s not always easy to know what you will get. For this reason, when traveling, there is an almost universal appeal for the safe, comfortable feel of home.
Northland brings a little piece of home into all we do
For over forty years, Northland has designed and created stylish, functional furniture for a variety of environments. From senior and student living to hotels in a broad range of designs, we have brought a little piece of home into all we do. We understand that no matter where you go, comfort is at the forefront in your mind, and Northland will be there to help bring it to you.

string(3529) "In years past, the word “hostels” has conjured up images of affordable dormitory-style housing in the minds of travelers and industry insiders alike. Today, the hostel industry has undergone a transformation that provides new possibilities for the budget-conscious traveler.
Student and young adult travel have become more common, and with it, new hospitality niches are emerging. Budget-conscious travel takes the forefront as more youth decide to travel before starting school and a career. Even after completing school and entering the workforce, millennials are spending more money and time exploring the world.
Airbnb and similar models demonstrate a shift in preference. With millennials leading the way, the rise in hostel travel can be attributed to a number of factors, including value pricing, convenient central locations, accommodations adapted to their needs and the social opportunities inherent with hostels.
Transformation of the hostel industry
“It’s astounding how much the hostel industry has transformed in the last five years, alone,” Feargal Mooney, chief executive of Hostelworld, said in a statement. “Today, we’re seeing luxury hostel accommodations that are offering the perfect balance of privacy, amenities and social activities.”
Poshtels is the name given to one style of this new breed of hostels. Combining “posh” elements with an updated hostel experience, these reimagined concepts fueled by the millennial travel trend show little sign of changing soon.
The hostel industry is redefining ideas of what’s included in a stay and custom furniture for hostels is right there alongside. New experiences include upgraded furnishings and a broader array of amenities. Free wifi, laundry and cleaning services, food and beverage services, bicycle rentals, libraries and media centers are just some of the services now available to hostel travelers.
”The growth trend is giving many large hotels a run for their money,“ Mooney said, noting that some big chains are creating ‘hostel-like’ properties to remain competitive. The new breed of hostels, Mooney added, allows “for serendipitous, adventurous things to happen in more places, and let millennial travelers get more value for their money.”

string(3046) "The importance of low VOC stains in contract furniture and low VOC finish options cannot be overemphasized.
But what, exactly, are VOCs, and why are they important?
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemical compounds released as gases from certain solids or liquids, and which may also lead to adverse health effects. Concentrations of most VOCs are consistently two to ten times higher indoors than outdoors.
Household products containing organic compounds include paints, varnishes, cleaning products, disinfecting products, cosmetics, degreasing and an array of hobby products. Fuels of all types are made up of organic chemicals. All of these can potentially release organic compounds when using them, and some while stored.
In addition to the indoor pollution created, VOCs find their way outside, contributing to air quality concerns outdoors. In California, for example, it’s been estimated that approximately two-thirds of VOC emissions come from paints and coatings.
Health issues from exposure to VOCs
In addition to pollution concerns, exposure to VOCs can result in a variety of health problems. The severity of symptoms can depend upon degree and duration of exposure, along with individual susceptibility and may include:
- Eye and respiratory tract irritation
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Allergic skin reaction
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Potential damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system
- Some can cause cancer in animals, as well as humans
What to look for in stains and finishes
Oil-based paints and stains have high VOC levels. Avoid epoxies and oil-based formulas with added dryers. Seek water-based stains and finishes, without biocides or added dryers.
Besides darkening the wood, another advantage the stains provide is protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays. This extends the life of furniture, which in turn has benefits for the environment, and budget concerns, due to less frequent replacement costs.
Northland uses only low VOC stains in contract furniture and finishes
At Northland, the well-being of our customers and their guests, as well as the health of our planet, is our concern. Reducing volatile organic compounds is one important step towards that end. We use low VOC stains in contract furniture, as well as low VOC finishes.
For over 40 years, Northland has had our clients in mind, and you can count on that continuing for the next 40 years and beyond.

string(2209) "Even as we move into February, with winter literally all around, it is still difficult to not think ahead to spring and summer. Thanks to increased rain and snow, we can expect nature to put on an amazing display after the spring thaw. This may be a good time to visit our national parks, especially Yellowstone.
Last fall, Yellowstone National Park completed an ambitious construction project, focused around Canyon Lodge. Canyon Lodge, the largest of the park’s nine lodging facilities, underwent a major facelift. Five large modern lodge buildings, each with approximately 80 guest rooms, replaced all 350 of the Frontier and Pioneer cabins. With the completion of the project, Canyon Lodge now has 590 guest rooms.
Canyon Lodge's project resulted in over 400 new rooms
They needed furniture for the project, and that is where Northland came into the picture. Located on the east side of the park, near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Canyon Lodge’s two-year redevelopment project resulted in over 400 new guest rooms. For the project, we shipped over 9 fully loaded 53’ semi-trucks of blanket-wrapped furniture. The furniture was custom-designed, hand-distressed Alder. We sent the following pieces over to Canyon Lodge:
- 758 Headboards with down-facing puck lights
- 443 Nightstands
- 411 Activity tables
- 340 Refrigerator cabinets
- 20 Three-Drawer desks
- 20 End tables
Northland finished 2016 on quite a high note. We also found ourselves busy with several projects in the Yellowstone Park vicinity. In addition to the furniture we produced for Canyon Lodge, we also produced pieces for:
· Grand Canyon Railroad Hotel
· Old Faithful Lodge
· Lake Yellowstone Hotel
· Swift Current Motor Inn & Cabins
· Lake Yellowstone Sandpiper
· Grant Village Lodges
· Apgar Village Lodge

string(2556) "Interesting things happen when you watch trends. One hospitality trend Northland is currently watching is co-living. With an emphasis on collaboration and community, there’s a noticeable shift taking place towards co-living.
In a nutshell, co-living is about community and developing connections between those who occupy that space. It’s group living, with shared kitchens and living areas and social programming.
Responding to shifts towards home sharing and other communal living concepts, hospitality companies have taken action. During 2016, companies like Airbnb and HomeStay watched their share of the hospitality market grow. While private hotels have different concepts and thus cannot directly compete with the Airbnbs and HomeStays, they can offer alternatives based around similar ideals.
Co-Living enters the mainstream
Last year, the co-living concept entered the mainstream for hospitality with AccorHotels’ newest brand: Jo&Joe. According to AccorHotels, Jo&Joe “...blends the best of private-rental hostel and hotel formats,” and calls it a “totally reinvented and disruptive experience in terms of design approach, catering, service, and customer journey.”
In 2017, there will be more emphasis on communal areas, as well as spaces that bring people together. This is true not only for hospitality but other sectors of society as well.
Companies are beginning to bridge gaps by creating shared spaces that blur the lines between work and home. Residential housing is growing in prevalence, especially on the US east coast.
Companies such as Common, PureHouse, WeWork/WeLive and NeueHouse have all developed ways to bring their employees together. There are a variety of concepts around the co-living/co-working theme. While each differs in some details, emphasis on shared space and communal experience remains.
Northland Furniture has long been a leader in the hospitality industry. For over forty years, we have survived trends and industry changes through responsive action, thoughtful design and quality manufacturing. While we are excited to watch how the industry changes, you can also count on Northland to not just be on the sidelines. We will be right there, doing what we have done for nearly half a century, creating quality furniture for you."

string(2056) "Life in the military, while rewarding for its opportunity to serve our country, has its difficulties. For many soldiers, living on base comes with its own set of challenges.
One of these challenges comes with living in the barracks. Outdated furniture that’s in need of replacing can make day-to-day living uncomfortable for the modern soldier. For those men and women separated from their families, having some comforts of home can soften that distance.
While seemingly simple, new furniture for military applications shows the soldier living in the barracks a genuine concern for their well-being. As part of enhancing morale, an infantry division recently worked to improve the quality of life for its soldiers by bringing in new furniture and other amenities to the battalion barracks. Following the install, a soldier stated “I wasn’t aware they were going to do this for us. You can tell that they really care about our well-being.” Sometimes, even the simplest acts can have profound effects.
Bases Are Often Looking to Improve Quality of Life
Military bases are often looking to improve quality of life for their soldiers and families. Also, furniture improvements go a long way towards that goal, and Northland Furniture can help.
Whether you’re looking for an extra long table for a new conference room, furnishings for offices or beds for the barracks, Northland can build the furniture you need. Don’t be concerned if you don’t see something you want in the collections we offer.. Our designers and craftsmen can create furniture uniquely designed for your specifications. We enjoy being creative and are excited to expand on our custom commercial furniture options.
Custom Furniture for Military Housing
Contact Northland for more information about custom furniture design for military housing. All of our collections are designed and manufactured in our 42,000 square foot US manufacturing facility by our team of engineers and craftsman. This means we’re able to manage the production process from start to finish, maintain flexibility to serve project needs and turn standard orders on shorter lead times, often within six to eight weeks – compared to twelve to sixteen from overseas providers.
Keeping good jobs in America should be a goal for any domestic manufacturer. We are proud to do our part in contributing to a strong US economy, and keeping jobs and profits in the States.
Flexibility to adapt as your needs change
We believe that working with a domestic manufacturer allows everyone involved the flexibility to adapt as needs and requirements change. During the course of any project, details are subject to change. Working with a US-based company helps make any necessary changes easy and efficient. Our lean manufacturing processes and robust technology allows us to offer competitive pricing across our collections, while still delivering excellent value.
Quality assurances provide us the ability to respond rapidly to your needs. Every piece of furniture produced by Northland uses top-of-the-line computer controlled machinery and a strict production schedule. Should any adjustments need to be made, we can do this quickly and effectively.
This improves our energy and cost efficiencies. As a result, we are able to provide competitively priced hospitality, student housing and senior living furniture built for durability.
Another factor to consider is that despite our best efforts, sometimes things can go wrong. No matter how well designed, how well planned the production cycle or how seamless the ordering process, problems can happen. When they do occur, rest assured Northland will remain close by. We provide immediate support and resolve any issues quickly and effectively.
Reducing our carbon footprint
Buying your furniture domestically can dramatically reduce our carbon footprint. Products manufactured and delivered in the US travel a significantly shorter distance, simplifying transportation. Simpler transportation means shorter lead times, and a decreased environmental impact. Northland also uses soft, damage-resistant reusable packaging, saving an enormous amount of waste each year. Northland builds sustainability into every piece of furniture it produces. We believe that furniture manufactured to provide lasting value and reduced weight on the earth is beneficial to our suppliers, our customers and to the generations to come.
Providing clients the expertise and service they expect
Northland takes pride in providing clients the expertise and service they expect. Using domestically sourced materials, including many from the Pacific Northwest, our craftsmen design and build furniture that can withstand high traffic and other challenging environments.
Northland offers one of the most comprehensive 10-year warranties in the industry. This is just further testament to our commitment to manufacturing durable furniture. We want your furniture to be the highest quality available. As a result, if you have any issues with your furniture, we will be there to assist quickly and effectively."

string(3462) "Hospitality design trends for 2017 indicate we will see both millennials and baby boomers with contrasting wants and needs, and accordingly, the industry will see challenges resulting from meeting those needs. In order to be successful, hotels will need to find the right mix of features to appeal to each audience.
“The easiest way to sum it up is that millennials seek to create a sharing experience—it’s a version of the “Uber effect”—while baby boomers look for a fundamental experience when choosing a hotel,” offered Jordan McInturf, vice president of sales with Shelby Williams.
Baby Boomer Seek Fundamental Comforts
When looking at baby boomer preference, most indicators point to familiar design elements. Here are some of the most commonly mentioned design trends for 2017:
- Rustic – Traditional furniture is a favorite among travelers. Inspired by nature and the countryside, rustic design helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that’s reminiscent of home.
- Metallics – Metallic tones are finding their way into many of the small details.
- Monochrome – This classic finish will never go out of style.
- Neutral tones – Inspiration from the outdoors paves the way for neutral, earthy tones
- Natural textures – Expect to see different techniques with texture, including wire and brushing, which helps to make wood grain pop.
Millennials Crave Unique Sharing Opportunities
On the other side, addressing the wants and needs of millenials requires some new approaches. Millennials want each experience they have in hotels to be unique. As a result, the challenges revolve around how to provide more unique, authentic experiences.
No generation before has ever been interwoven like technology and millennials . This means that when staying at a hotel, millenials will expect much more than free Wi-Fi. They are seeking new ways to create and share their experiences, and simultaneously want to do so in environmentally conscious spaces. As a result, we’re seeing hotel lobby and room designs morphing into more open and flexible spaces and technology incorporated into functional furniture. Scaled down design with an emphasis on authentic and sharable experiences will be the standard.
As consumer tastes evolve, Northland Furniture will also be there to help. As we often say, we leave nothing on the shelf. We don’t carry stock furniture that sits, waiting to be purchased. We craft unique commercial furniture that’s made according to the specifications of our customers.
As an industry leader for over 40 years, you can trust that as wants and needs change, Northland Furniture will be there at the forefront.

string(2928) "There’s been a lot of discussion on LEED and LEED-certified buildings recently. But what exactly does that mean and how does it relate to furniture? This is reasonable question and certainly one worth exploring.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, is a globally accepted third-party certification program for sustainable building design and construction. While the US Green Building Council (USGBC) developed the program almost 20 years ago, LEED is now the world’s most widely used third-party verification program for green buildings.
The USGBC developed LEED to consider all aspects of buildings at any point in their development. Buildings seeking LEED certification earn points by addressing sustainability issues in several areas. Based on these points, projects can earn one of four levels of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
LEED-certified buildings use resources more efficiently, saving water, energy, and ultimately, money. This is why in less than twenty years’ time LEED has grown to become the global standard for sustainable building.
LEED v4
Recently, USGBC marked the release of LEED v4. LEED v4 aims to improve the overall community experience through its "bolder" and more flexible design.
LEED v4 achieves its mission through design. While thorough and far more comprehensive than we can report, here are four areas where LEED v4 improved upon LEED:
- Increased focus on materials, what they contain and how they affect the environment
- Offers a clearer picture on water efficiency, while estimating building use
- Takes a more performance-based approach to indoor environmental quality to ensure improved occupant comfort
- Emphasizes smart grid thinking by offering credits to projects participating in demand response programs.
Northland Furniture doesn’t only provide long-lasting, functional and practical pieces; we also recognize that as a member of the global community we have a responsibility of sensibility. With this in mind, here are a couple examples of how Northland uses LEED-friendly practices.
Low-VOC
From our low-VOC, LEED-applicable water-based stains and finishes, to the local woods we source to limit our footprint and our use of blanket wrapping to limit packaging, sustainability is key at Northland.
Sustainable Woods
Northland uses both solid and engineered woods sourced from the Pacific Northwest, utilizing as much from the tree as possible while minimizing waste.
These are just a couple of more reasons to specify Northland on your next project, and how to potentially qualify your project for LEED credits.

string(4499) "For the past 10 years, real estate developers and investors have been pioneering a previously unexplored market, resort-style student housing. While very convenient, college campuses provide housing that is often extremely expensive, while leaving students short on privacy and high-end amenities. College dorm rooms are also frequently filled long before the demand for housing is met, leaving hundreds of students on the waiting list. On the other hand, off-campus housing may be farther away, but the services and amenities included in the cost of rent are valuable enough to students to move out of the dorms. In other cases, universities are focusing finances on improving academics and are turning over housing development, renovation and management to private investors in exchange for a cut of the profits.
Limitations Shape New Opportunities For Resort-Style Student Housing
As land near college campuses becomes scarce, building projects become more vertical, moving parking within the new buildings, also known as podium structures. Luxury architectural styles have moved away from traditional and into more contemporary and edgy designs. Social and study spaces have become larger, meaning an increase in size for clubhouses; at the same time, high-end finishing features like flooring, hardware, kitchens and appliances have become a new standard for a large number of students.
Other enticing features of resort-style student housing are the larger living quarters and furnishings included in apartments. Students aren't often able to own much furniture, nor would they have the means to move it when changing residences without incurring costly moving charges. This introduced the need for high-quality furniture in the student housing space, as students expect the luxuriousness of the apartment community to follow them into their private lodgings.
Expectations Include Higher Environmental Standards
Not only have students' tastes increased in extravagance, they've also shifted to reflect environmental-consciousness. Young adults have grown up with higher awareness of toxins, emissions and waste, and place higher values on safe materials, production processes, conservation and sustainability. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is an international green building certification system which accredits building projects that meet high levels of standards - certification levels include: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Student apartments that follow green practices and are LEED certified are all the more desirable as a place to call home.
Northland's educational furniture offerings cater to dorm-style living, featuring long-lasting functional and practical pieces like desks, chests of drawers and bunk-beds. In the realm of resort-style student housing, upgrading to Northland Furniture's education line would meet the expectations that the furnishings match the sophistication of the surrounding environment, as well as the need for a wider range of furniture types. Northland uses only water-based, low VOC stains which qualify for LEED credits, as well as pre-catalyzed lacquers. They also use a combination of solid and engineered woods which decreases the amount of waste incurred, and increases the amount of utilized wood product to 95%. Maintaining domestic headquarters and material sourcing keeps environmental costs of product transportation to a minimum.
While not every trend is worth following, Nortland Furniture is committed to providing the resort-style student housing industry with beautifully designed furniture made with environmentally-friendly processes and materials.

string(3250) "As you may have noticed in recent years, the words "technology" and "seniors" have been showing up together increasingly more often. According to Pew Research, almost 60% of seniors use the internet and 77% have cell phones. Baby Boomers entering the market for senior housing are demanding that the comforts of home they are used to - which include technological services and high-functionality living quarters - become priority offerings for senior communities. Since technology is redefining how seniors interact with family and friends as well as improving their quality of life, we should also look ahead and discuss how technology will affect senior living furniture design.
Technological advances benefitting seniors include cellphone functionality (large displays, advanced audio accessibility), remote controls for doors, windows, temperature control and lights, and wearable personal safety monitors. Although at a lower rate than the general population, seniors are also adopting social media, communication software like Skype, and mobile devices like tablets and smartphones which they can use to connect with family and friends, as well as senior-centric apps to maintain cognitive function.
Using Senior Living Furniture Design to Accommodate New Technology
Seniors want to stay connected, and embedding power outlets and docking stations into furniture improves accessibility. Enabling people to plug devices into a table, chair, or other furniture means plugging one cord from that piece of furniture is the only time someone will need to bend over to access a hard-to-reach outlet. Since devices have become more mobile and will be plugged and unplugged more often, this is important. Wireless boosters could also be included in furniture that residents will be near while using wireless devices to ensure their connection to the internet isn't interrupted.
Personal safety monitors have their advantages, but there are some instances when wearable technology can interfere with the comfort of the wearer. Integrating technology into a bed could mean easily monitoring a community resident's sleep patterns, as well as a steady reading of their vital signs, without requiring the resident to wear bothersome or obstructive equipment.
With so many portable devices in use, furniture should be designed to maintain healthy posture. Tabletops and other flat surfaces should be at the right height and chairs should use ergonomic configuration to enable good neck and spine positioning.
Seniors are living longer lives and are looking for communities that provide the amenities they are looking for. Technology empowers them to stay connected to their loved ones and engage in continued education and interaction - furniture design should support and enable these advancements.

string(3558) "The variety of lodging options that exist today for the modern traveler is vast.
