Contract Furniture Made in the USA Has the Home Team Advantage

Products labeled ‘Made in the USA’ may take us on a decades-deep walk down memory lane. How many of these labels do we really see any more? Surprisingly, there are still sources of pride to be found for domestically produced goods in the USA. Northland Furniture, founded in 1976 in Bend, Oregon, has been producing contract furniture made in the USA for 40 years.

If You Count on Imports for Contract Furniture, You May Think Twice

The end of August saw a break in the global supply chain, when Hanjin, a large Korean ocean carrier, came under financial collapse just in time for the seasonal uptick in holiday shopping. Ports turned away Hanjin vessels unless docking and loading fees had been prepaid. Goods intended for drop off at certain locations remained either undelivered onboard or were offloaded at distant ports.

In these cases, buyers may be imposed hefty additional transit fees for some goods while others may never arrive at their destinations. This breakdown in delivery has driven up costs for ocean freighting, a change that will persist until the balance between supply chain capacity and demand is recovered.

The Hidden Costs of Imported Goods

Many American consumers take advantage of low in-store and online prices from overseas suppliers. Not surprisingly, companies reap the same rewards, buying lower-priced products, such as contract furniture, in bulk. These offerings, however, are affixed with a hidden price tag: shorter life cycles—which when reached, require disposal and repurchase, perpetuating the buying cycle. The costs of low-cost production for short-term savings are seen in higher ecological and cost footprints. At some point, we’ve probably all wondered why products made overseas are so inexpensive. When production moves abroad, a system of cost externalization is established, where indirect costs are offloaded on third parties. This means anywhere from exploitation, where workers receive lower wages for longer hours in unregulated working conditions to ecological depletion and waste. The financial and environmental costs of transporting goods with shorter lifecycles from abroad only add to the price tag.

Northland Furniture Company Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Northland Furniture Company proudly celebrates our 40th anniversary in 2016. Throughout the year we will be taking a look back at our history as a commercial furniture manufacturer in Bend, Oregon. Additionally, we’ll be looking at recently completed projects and looking forward into the future of Northland Furniture Company.

History of Northland Furniture Company

Northland Furniture Company started manufacturing commercial furniture for the hospitality industry, senior living communities and dormitories in 1976. Back then our facility was located in the Old Mill District, back when it was actually a timber production mill. The Old Mill has a rich history, being home at one point in time to two of the largest pine sawmills in the world. In the beginning, Northland sourced much of the wood material for our furniture from the old Brooks-Scanlon mill before it closed in 1983.

In 1976, a group of local craftsmen formed Northland Furniture Company. Bend was the ideal place to launch such a venture due to the timber tradition that flowed from our surrounding forests. When Northland started production, their mission, which still stands today, was to construct high-quality casegoods and hospitality furniture for hotels and resorts. Northland’s reputation for service and quality grew and so did our market – expanding from Oregon all the way across the United States.

40 years ago when Northland started, we had the vision of bringing Pacific Northwest craftsmanship to the entire nation. We wanted to not only create quality furniture but also creating living wage jobs that support our local community. 40 years later, we’re pleased to say that we’ve done just that and can’t wait to continue doing so well into the future.

Join us in celebrating 40 spectacular years of quality furniture, community support, and positive environmental impact. Northland Furniture Company – 40 years and counting.

Why Buy From Custom Oregon Furniture Manufacturers

‘Made in the USA’ has always been a slogan proudly displayed by manufacturing companies in America. Everything from textiles to custom Oregon furniture manufacturers, are designed, engineered, produced and shipped from America. At Northland, we’re proud to be a custom Oregon furniture manufacturer that completes all of our projects in Bend, Oregon, with locally sourced materials.

Benefits to Buying From Oregon Furniture Manufacturers

When sourcing furniture for your new hotel, senior living facility, college dormitory or mountain lodge, many options lay in front of you. When looking for the most inexpensive option, many companies will go with a furniture manufacturer from overseas, primarily China and Vietnam. While this purchase may initially seems like the least expensive route, it often ends up costing you more in the long run.

Packaging, Handling & Freight

Transportation and handling play a large role in the decision to buy from Oregon furniture manufacturers. Shipping and handling costs from Asia paired with the wait at customs and the limitations on freight and delivery options mean you’ll be paying handsomely for inexpensive furniture. Additionally, it usually take up to three months to receive orders from outside of the United States.

Responsiveness

As a custom Oregon furniture manufacturer, we’re responsive and quick. If disaster strikes your hotel – be it a fire or a destructive rock band, we have the capability to turn around custom furniture quickly. It’s important to us to help you in your time of need as quickly as possible. Getting replacement furniture from the manufacturer you choose overseas could mean another three month wait. Why wait when you get your replacement furniture instantly?

Storage and Assembly

Many large hotels replace and furnish their rooms by floor. When you choose Oregon furniture manufacturers like Northland, you’ll be able to do this easily as we have the ability to build and store furniture until you’re ready for it. Place your entire order and then make replacements by floor while we store the pieces you aren’t ready for yet. This convenience is unheard of outside of America. Get what you want, when you want it with Northland Furniture.

When it comes to choosing between custom Oregon furniture manufacturers and a company overseas, consider the extra costs and inconveniences that aren’t immediately visible with the non-American made option. Northland Furniture builds high-quality, durable commercial furniture in Bend, Oregon.

Northland Creates Hotel Furniture Built for Longevity

At Northland Furniture, we build hotel furniture for longevity. We stand behind every piece of hotel furniture we build with a 10 year warranty. Recently, we’ve talked to some very happy customers who have told us that they still have the same hotel furniture they purchased from us 30 years ago and it’s holding strong. At this point the furniture may need to be updated out of the interest of aesthetics or design, but not for lack of quality and durability.

Hotel Furniture at The Benson Hotel

We happily serve many clients across the country, but during a recent stay at Portland’s Benson Hotel, we were pleased to see the longevity of hotel furniture they purchased from us in 1992. Certain rooms still featured the high-quality, durable hotel furniture they furnished their rooms with back in ‘92. While they are planning to upgrade, they will take the furniture from Northland to another property, extending it’s life even further.

Northland Longevity

For nearly 40 years, Northland Furniture has been manufacturing commercial furniture for hotels, timeshares, nursing homes and education facilities. Our commitment to quality ensures every piece of furniture is quality checked and approved before leaving our facility.

  • We use damage-resistant packaging, which includes hand wrapping furniture in blankets
  • Using these soft packing materials helps cut down on waste, costs and shipping
  • We have employees who have been with the company between 15 and 35 years, meaning they consistently know how to build in quality
  • We feature a 10 year warranty, but most of our hotel furniture lasts much longer

When seeking hotel furniture for your lodge or resort, look no further than Northland Furniture. Our high-quality, durable furniture is proven time and time again to last. At Northland, we’re proud of the longevity of our hotel furniture and can’t wait for you to see what we develop next.
